Highlights From New York Fashion Week

By Kristen Peuvion on September 15, 2014

New York Fashion Week is every fashionista and fashionisto’s favorite week out of the entire year. It happens twice a year, once in February and once in September.

The fashion week in February shows clothes from designers’ fall lines and the September shows showcase designers’ spring lines. Typically the week lasts anywhere from seven to nine days and the world’s best designers bring out all the stops to put on some of the best fashion shows of the year.

Don’t be fooled though:New York Fashion Week isn’t all about the clothing. These shows show off not only the designers’ hard work on all of their clothing but also the designers’ all around creativity with their extravagant sets and themes.

Here are some highlights from this past week’s New York Fashion Week.

Miley Cyrus Breaks Out As A Designer

Miley Cyrus took a break from her wild antics, singing and dancing, and took a shot at designing during this past week. New friend and designer Jeremy Scott said he met Cyrus at one of her parties where she showed him the jewelry she was working on. He felt like it really meshed well with his designs and asked if she wanted to design some pieces for his show during NYFW.

The jewelry she made for Scott’s show was colorful and child-like. The child-like vibe of the jewelry was enhanced by the alphabet beads and little toys she used to create the pieces. Her designs weren’t just limited to jewelry, though–she even made a headpiece for the show.

Overall, Cyrus’ designs were a big hit. Maybe we’ll see more from her in future fashion weeks to come.

A 13-Year-Old Made History

If you have ever felt like you aren’t doing much with your life, then this story probably won’t make you feel any better.

Thirteen year old Isabella Rose Taylor had a show at this year’s NYFW. You heard it: 13. This young designer has achieved what some designers can only dream about by having her designs not just walk down the runway, but walk down the runway during Fashion Week.

Taylor is a member of MENSA and is already attending college, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that she had this show. The girl is obviously capable of doing big things. She has been designing since the age of nine when she first learned to sew, and now has her line being sold at Nordstrom.

She may be taking the fashion show by storm, but she’s still a kid at heart. In fact, she uses some of her childishness as inspiration for her clothing stating that she includes some of those playful touches because it adds a “little bit of irony, just because fashion can be taken just a little too seriously sometimes.”

Betsey Johnson’s Marriage Themed Show

In a time when marriage is a hotly contested debate, Betsey Johnson decided to make it the theme of her Spring 2015 NYFW show. She included gay and transgendered people in her show which shows how far we’ve come in the debate about gay marriage. Her groundbreaking move to include people of all different sexualities was a big hit and her wedding inspired frocks were equally popular among the audience of her show.

Including gay and transgendered models wasn’t the only shocking thing about Johnson’s show. At one point during the show, one of the models strutted their stuff down the runway in a see-through number which left the top completely bare. Johnson’s shows are always a bit wacky and over the top, and this one was no different.

Marc Jacobs’ Barbie-Inspired Finale

Marc Jacobs ended this season’s New York Fashion Week with a Barbie themed set contrasted with military inspired outfits. Also at this show, Beats by Dr. Dre headphones were playing computerized voices speaking of a simpler life. Jacobs’ whole show demonstrates the insane amount of work these designers put into their shows to make it more than just a fashion show; they want it to be an experience for the audience.

Jacobs also made a statement by having his models wear no makeup. His decision to do this along with the military designs greatly contrast the Barbie inspired set and really make a statement considering the fashion industry is built on glamorizing women.

Also notable of Jacobs’ finale show: Kendall Jenner was one of the models walking down the runway.
