The end of September is readily approaching which means your biggest TV show addictions will be returning to the air as they premiere their new seasons.

While many shows feature strong male protagonists and characters, there are a great number of female roles worth noting. Here are today’s top 10 most awesome female characters on TV that deserve your attention and obsession.

1. Mindy Lahiri, “The Mindy Project.” Mindy Kaling plays the rom-com loving OB/GYN Lahiri on the hit Fox show which just began its third season.

Lahiri strives to have the perfect balance between love and work all while looking fashionable and delivering fast-paced witty banter and quips with her associates, friends and various boyfriends.

Kaling delivers an outstanding performance as Lahiri who is full of funny quotes, good advice and real talk. Lahiri’s take-it-or-leave-it attitude and determination to find love no matter how or who makes her an awesome female character on TV and super fun to watch.

2. Meredith Grey, “Grey’s Anatomy.” Ellen Pompeo plays the series’ protagonist on the ABC medical drama created by Shona Rhimes which will enter its 11th season on September 25.

Grey’s personality can be dark and her personal life as well as her work life is full of complicated ups and downs and twists and turns.

No matter what life throws her way, Grey manages to overcome and remain strong. Her refusal to take things lying down and simply accept whatever comes her way make her an awesome female character.

3. Olivia Pope, “Scandal.” Kerry Washington plays the trendsetting former lawyer and White House aide Pope on the Shonda Rhimes-created ABC hit drama whose fourth season premiers September 25.

Pope is now a crisis manager with her own firm which concentrates on political situations and is based in Washington D.C.; she also has an affair with the President of the U.S.

Though she has a messy and complex personal life, Pope doesn’t let it stop her from being an eloquent fast talker who fights for the good guys, which makes her one of the most awesome female characters on TV.

4. Elizabeth Keen, “The Blacklist.” Megan Boone plays rookie FBI profiler Special Agent Keen on the NBC drama whose second season premieres September 22.

Though Keen’s somewhat of a novice, she was requested specifically by Raymond Reddington, a most wanted fugitive who turned himself in and will only work with her.

Her ability to work with the difficult and mysterious Reddington, while struggling to wade through the deceit and secrets of her personal life to find out the truth make her an awesome female character.

5. Leslie Knope, “Parks and Recreation.” Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member and all-around funny girl Amy Poehler plays Knope on the NBC comedy going into its last season.

Knope is the ambitious, determined and optimistic Deputy Parks Director of the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana who aspires to become the first female President of the United States. Her awesomeness stems from her loyalty to her friends and coworkers, her passion for service, and her love of JJ’s Diner’s waffles.

6. Amy Farrah Fowler, “The Big Bang Theory.” Mayim Bialik plays the neurobiologist Fowler on the CBS comedy going into its seventh season.

Bialik’s character starts out as the Sheldon Cooper female counterpart– socially awkward, somewhat condescending, and overly rational–but Fowler integrates into the group as she evolves into a more feminine and socially comfortable person.

Fowler’s ability to handle Cooper and her enthusiasm and loyalty to her girlfriends make her an awesome female character and hilarious to watch.

7. Olivia Benson, “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.” Mariska Hargitay plays police detective and sergeant Benson on the NBC police procedural whose 16th season is set to start on September 24.

Benson deals with sensitive sex crimes in Manhattan and though she’s tough, still gets emotionally involved in her cases and their victims. Her passion for justice and her empathetic nature make her one of the most awesome female characters on TV.

8. Temperance Brennan, “Bones.” Emily Deschanel plays the forensic anthropologist nicknamed “Bones” on the Fox crime drama series whose 10th season will premiere September 25.

Brennan is very literal, socially awkward, and blunt but brilliant and can be difficult to work with. Throughout the series, Brennan evolves and develops as a person and character to slowly show more emotion and increase her sensitivity.

Brennan’s contract work with the FBI to help them solve modern-day murder cases and her “take no prisoners” attitude make her an awesome female TV character.

9. Carrie Mathison, “Homeland.” Claire Danes plays the CIA officer Mathison on the award-winning Showtime drama which will kick off its fourth season in October.

Mathison is a former field operative who was reassigned to the CIA’s Langley Counterterrorism Center after she inadvertently had a hand in causing an international incident. Though Mathison was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in college, she doesn’t let it stop her from doing what she thinks is right, which makes her an awesome female character.

10. Selina Meyer, “Veep.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays the female U.S. President Meyer on the hit HBO comedy whose fourth season will air in 2015.

Meyer is a former Senator who after her campaign for president failed was asked to be the triumphant candidate’s vice president; in the third season of the show, she becomes president after the President resigns.

What makes Meyer an awesome female character is that she rolls with the punches and is willing to be patient and play in the men’s world of politics in order to get what she wants.
