5 Websites That Will Help Start Your Fashion Career

By Kristen Peuvion on January 26, 2015

Fashion has quickly become an industry that thousands of college girls and guys and recent grads want to get involved in.

However, fashion can be a tough industry to break into. You need connections, you need to be super driven and you need to have some stellar interview skills, but that’s not all you need.

Before all of that, you need to know where to look for these internships and jobs. Regular career finding sites like Monster and Career Builder are fine, but for a job in the fashion industry, you need to look somewhere a bit more specific.

Here are five of the best sites to check out during your job search for the perfect job or internship in the fashion industry.

The company’s website/social media pages.

The first and best place to look for job and internship potentials is the company’s own website and social media outlets. Keep a close eye on your dream company’s pages because that is the place where the job opening will probably be posted first.

Rather than finding the opening listed on a third party site, you can find out firsthand from the company. Plus, spending more time on the company’s website and social media will be beneficial to your knowledge about the company.

Aside from just looking at the job opening, spend some time just browsing the website to learn more about what makes that company unique. The more you educate yourself on the company, the better off you’ll be.

Stylecareers.com

Stylecareers.com is a cool website that allows you to look for specific types of jobs in the fashion industry like a buyer, photographer or stylist, or specific areas within the fashion industry like home, apparel or beauty.

You can also choose which region of the U.S. you want to look for those of you who really want to stay in a specific place. This is a great aspect of the website because it shows what all is available in areas of the U.S. that aren’t necessarily known for fashion.

For example, you can specifically look for jobs in the Midwest and there are surprisingly a lot of openings. Most of the time, people think they need to move to New York or Los Angeles for a successful fashion career, and while there is some truth to that, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t fashion jobs available in other cities all over the country.

This website shows all of the budding fashion employees out there that a fashion career is possible no matter where you are located.

Talenttrail.com

Talent Trail isn’t like your normal job search engine, mostly because it’s not really a search engine at all. Instead, Talent Trail is more of a matchmaking service rather than a job search engine. It’s not specifically a website for fashion jobs and internships but you’ll be exposed to tons of jobs within the industry.

All you have to do is fill in a little information about yourself and the website will direct you to companies that you match with based on your interests and skills. The downside to this website is that it only matches you with internships in the California area. So if you’re open to moving or happen to already live in California, this is the site for you.

Fashionista.com

Fashionista.com is above all a fashion news website, but it also has a very large section dedicated to careers. It has tons of fashion job and internship postings for people of all skill levels and within different areas in the industry. Some recent postings include a fashion week internship with Negri Firman and a PR internship with Chic Little Devil Style House.

Freefashioninternships.com

Freefashioninternships.com offers a huge variety of fashion internships all over the country. They have huge names and company listings such as Prada, Diane Von Furstenberg and Vogue. Of course with big names like this, the competition to get some of these internships is going to be intense, but well-worth the time and effort.

An internship with one of these companies or designers will definitely launch your fashion career and you’ll have a long career within the industry, but this might not be the website to focus on if you don’t have any experience whatsoever. But it’s always good to have some reach options, so don’t completely rule out this site.

So don’t stress too much about breaking into this tough industry. Your interview skills, resume and other factors are of course important, but you’ve got to know where to look first.

These five websites are a great place to start your search for your dream fashion job or internship.
