Best Ways To Connect With Your New Boss

By Kylie Exline on April 28, 2016

We are all aware of what it is like working with a boss given we all have one or at least have had a few. (Unless you are your own boss, and if so, then good for you, buddy.) But I am sure you remember those golden days nonetheless.

We tend to not always get along with them, think they are consistently out to get us, and strongly believe that they are rude 24/7 just because they sort of get away with it (they pay our bills, okay?).

However, if your last boss just got fired or decided to retire, there are ways to get along with the boss that was just hired … or promoted. Ouch. Continue to read below to discover how you can be on their good side.

Tone the attitude

Now, we all know how we react when someone new comes into the workplace. We tread lightly, are maybe not our best selves toward them, and let them know that they are the new kid, whereas you, well you have been here for eight long months and counting.

With your new boss however — you know, the person that is now in charge of you — these actions will not fly. You must be amiable, polite, and respectful, no buts.

Give them a chance and they may pleasantly surprise you. If they just so happen to be worse than your last one, practice that fake smile you have got going on and prepare to be friendly every day. Okay, maybe like three out of the five days. You still want to keep your job, people.

Offer assistance to an extent

With the new boss in the workplace, you want to show that you actually care about your job and that you take it somewhat seriously, but also that you are willing to learn things differently.

For instance, your last boss may have told you to do a certain job a specific way. However, the new boss may have a completely separate system. Show that you are capable of learning.

Everyone knows that your boss is currently the new guy, so whatever you do, do not rub it in. You can offer help, which consists of you being nice, but not too much. This way, you are giving them the individual opportunity of discovering things on their own, all while lending them a helping hand. It is like teaching a child to walk. You go, you.

Include them sporadically

Now, I am not talking about inviting them to the co-workers get-together every Friday night down by the local bar. But rather, if four of you are ordering Chinese on a Tuesday, it would be really nice if you asked if they wanted some egg rolls or something. Who does not like a fortune cookie?

This shows that you are not (completely) faking your niceness, but also being genuine where it really matters: food. And it allows them to not be your superior 100 percent of the time.

If there are inside jokes, try your best not to consistently exclude them, and if anything, feel free to make your own, personal with them. Sometimes all we need is a friend, especially if it is at a job we actually hate.

Do not compare them

Let us say that you really liked your last boss. I am talking about being basically best friends, hanging out together outside of work, and finishing each other’s sentences. Okay, that is a little much but you get the idea.

Whatever you do, do not compare them. They most likely, as in definitely, have a different way of doing things. The last thing they want to be reminded of is that they are a replacement, or new to the job.

Give encouraging words, offer rare advice, and do not insert your opinion where it is not needed at all. Keep in mind, you are not the boss, they are.

Having a new boss can be exciting, scary, and maybe even refreshing, depending. Regardless, they are there to stay, as of right now, so you should start getting used to the idea.

There are various ways that you can get along with them, most of them consisting of you being nice and offering a little smile throughout the long day.

The best thing to do is to start on a good note and who knows what will come of it? They could be your potential future spouse, best friend, or forever enemy. Regardless, attempt to be nice and you may just get a cookie at the end of the day, in the form of a raise or promotion that is.
